About

papito 3.JPG

Richard Hughes is an American writer, educator, and humanitarian whose life has spanned continents, cultures, and causes. A graduate of San Gabriel High School in California, he went on to study Literature at the University of Hawaii, where his love for language, storytelling, and the sea began to intertwine. Before dedicating his time to education, Hughes was a professional baseball player in the minor leagues for the Cleveland Yakima team—an early chapter that shaped his discipline, teamwork, and spirit of perseverance.

Richard Hughes – Author, Educator, Humanitarian

A world traveler at heart, Hughes has lived in Panama, Samoa, Mexico, and across South America. He spent nearly three decades in Bolivia, where he founded Hughes Schools in Cochabamba—a project born from his belief that education should nurture integrity, curiosity, and compassion. While the school has received international recognition, what Hughes values most is the spirit of its mission and the lives it continues to transform.

An artist in every sense, he is a painter, guitarist, novelist, and poet, exploring through his work the beauty and contradictions of the human experience. His novels and poetry reflect a life of constant movement—across oceans, languages, and ideas—and a deep commitment to empathy as a creative force.

He once lived aboard a sailboat while traveling through South America, surfing and writing between ports. Now a resident of New Jersey, Hughes remains a fluent Spanish speaker and a passionate believer in cultural exchange, still inspired by both his Polish-American roots and the warmth of his Bolivian home.

At heart, Richard Hughes is a fighter for peace, a believer in the arts, and a champion of humanity—a man whose life’s work continues to inspire integrity, imagination, and hope in others. He currently resides in the United States, where he continues to write, travel and change lives.
